Fast 5 Diary Three Week Summary January 2 - 22

Summary after 3 weeks (January 2 - 22nd)

I am down @2 lbs.
My memory is that I have felt at my best when still a few pounds lighter, but seriously it is not my primary goal to lose weight; rather it is my goal to get ride of some of the belly fat :-(  So we'll see how that works out.
My waist *may* be a little smaller, but there is not enough of a difference that I feel confident that I am not squeezing the tape measure or measuring in a different place.

I still like Fast 5. Thought it would be a lot harder.  It's not hard, and I like that I can have fun with dinner

    Fast 5 Diary January 19

So today I talked to a friend at work.  He wondered why I was not eating lunch.  I told him that I was at war with my belly fat, and decided to try Fast 5.  He seemed concerned that fasting with a 5 hour window to eat was bad for my health.  I am not worried, but to validate my assumptions have scheduled a Physical, a few months out, to check blood work.

Re: dinner, no hubby tonight (he is out with work friends) and I made grilled cheese for the girls (their favorite).  They had apples and grapes as well.  I had the tuna from the tuna sandwich I bought at lunch (inspiring work friend's questions) but didn't eat.  I ate 4 crackers with cheese.  I ate an apple with peanut butter.  I'll post a "measurement" summary this weekend.

    Fast 5 Diary January 18

Definitely easier to fast during the weekdays.  Just so busy, and have a good routine punctuated with coffee, water, or diet coke whenever I want.  So far have really enjoyed dinners and not been careful at all.  Last night I made London Broil, marinated for 2 days in lime juice, cumin, cayenne pepper, olive oil, Trader Joes 21 Seasoning Salute, and salt.  I made prosciutto wrapped asparagus and roasted the rest of the asparagus in olive oil and salt.  I ate an apple with peanut butter.  I also made grilled cheese for the girls, and had a few slices of the gruyere.  I am not hungry this morning.  I'll post a "measurement" summary this weekend.

    Fast 5 Diary January 15

Confirming that weekends are going to be the challenge with this diet.  Funny, because formerly weekends were the easiest and most effective days.  I may have to re-think my approach to weekends.

Fast 5 Diary Two Week Summary January 1 - 14

    Summary 1/2/2012 - 1/14/2012:
I am really glad I tried something different and surprised at the number of high number of pros and lower number of cons (so far).  I would never have tried this ten years ago.

    Pros:
    1. It is easy to know exactly what I have eaten, to understand what is effective.  No mysteries.
    2. I really like being hungry before I eat.  It makes me eat more responsibly; when I am hungry I don't want junk.
    3. It saves time to eat once a day. It really saves time. It's a little eye opening how much time I spent thinking about what to eat for lunch, going to lunch, eating lunch and getting back to work. Now I just do that when I want to socialize.
    4. I look forward to dinner for a few reasons because I eat what I want.  Fun!
    5. So far measurements are good (see below).

    Neither Pro nor Con
I am indulging in the "brake" fast.  The closest I came to an all day fast was the first day.
    Cons:
    1. It is a little awkward not to eat when I eat lunch with one other person.  It is less awkward in a lunch "meeting" with a group.
    2.  Sometimes I get really hungry. Less so now than at the beginning.
    3. Weekends are surprisingly hard, since I am not running off to meetings all the time and have fewer distractions.
    4. In the words of my husband every morning, who also started Fast 5 on January 1st, "I'm not ripped yet."

    Measurements
    1. Am I losing any weight?  yes
    2. Are the rolls diminishing?  (I am not going for the stomach my 14 year daughter old has, but less of that nonsense would be good) a little
    3. Can I sustain this?  Time will tell
    4. Does it suck the joy out of my life? No!
    5. Does it bring any joy to my life?  Kind of.  One of my favorite things is making dinner, and it makes making dinner more fun!
    6. Is it working for my family? I think so.  I think they enjoy the dinners I am making, and other than that should not affect them.

    Fast 5 Diary January 1 - January 9

    January 1
    Saw this on Twitter:
"Starting tomorrow, I am eating rationally again. The holiday time is KILLER for anyone attempting to shed a few pounds"  (Billy Hallowell tweeted this on January 1)
"Break" fast: 1 rollo with coffee, 1 Fuyu persimmon (such a weakness for these!)

Bake banana bread all day to use overripe banana; taste batter taste bread (incredibly good due to the overripe banana chunks on the bottom of the pan and the crumbly stuff on the top)

**(not really fasting with all the tasting of the batter, so not sure I am starting today....)

Exercised on StairMaster and 2 chin ups (New Years resolution - 2/day everyday)

Dinner:  Made pork roast and fried yucca for New Years Day: had small plate (5-6 bites) of pork, and a bigger plate of fried yuca (if I am going to indulge, yuca frita will always be one of my top choices)
Did not make a green vegetable, which is unusual for me, but good news for my family.

    January 2

Dinner: more fried yuca (six pieces, small caesar salad, 3 crackers 2 bites pork, airborne, DDP, 1 glass wine and Oklahoma State at Fiesta Bowl!)

    January 7th
Up a few tenths of a pound---understandable (key will be to do less of this past evening meal behavior than the other days if I can). Not hungry.

    Coffee with cream, vitamins

Having a pedicure with Sibyl and a Diet Dr. Pepper

Late lunch at Biaggis with Sibyl; did not order anything but a glass of wine and a diet coke, ate 1 piece of bread with "Italian butter"  Should have resisted.  Definitely tasted good and did not eat more. **It's kind of weird not to eat when the other person with you is eating.

Dinner: cook roasted shrimp with feta from The Barefoot Contessa's book

    January 8th

    Coffee with cream, vitamins

Shopping with Sibyl: went to REI to look for hiking boots for Sibyl.  **Note to self: Don't go there again!  Was like going to Whole Foods with more athletic younger people.  Several clerks constantly raved about the membership:  only 20 dollars to "own" part of the company (even though my friend Sibyl lives in FL and there are no REIs there!), and on and on about the company's green initiatives.  Could not think of another way to get this clerks attention who was trying to hand out membership applications, but to say, "No don't waste your time with me.  I am against the environment.  I don't like bugs, I am not outdoorsy, and I don't support green initiatives."  Upside, the clerk stopped trying to sell me a membership.  Downside, half of the customers in the store turned and gave me dirty looks.  Thought they were going to murder me!

Lunch at Carolina Ale House: did not order anything but a glass of wine and diet coke.  Ate 1 crouton with Ranch dressing.

**One downside of this diet is that it is a little awkward when out with others.
